NGC Islands Insider: It’s Their Story
With 7,107 islands that make up the Philippine archipelago, National Geographic Channel places focus on six significant island through its newest documentary feature entitled “Islands Insider.“
The six part documentary series Islands Insider will take the viewer on an adventure to these scenic islands rich in culture and story. In partnership with the Department of Tourism, NGC will showcase the distinct travel and cultural destinations of the country featuring Mountain Province’s Batad Rice Terraces, Palawan’s Coron , Batangas’ Anilao and Taal, and Benguet’s Siquijor and Mt. Pulag, to show you why it’s truly more fun in the Philippines.
What differentiates this documentary is that the script does not try to overwhelm the viewers with products of its own research. The National Geographic Channel feature allows the locals from each of the location to tell their own story.
“Tourism destinations are not static. They evolve and deteriorate over time so they need to be preserved for the benefit and appreciation of future generations,” says Producer Ginggay Hontiveros of The Extra Mile Productions.

Media Launch
The NatGeo Islands Insider documentary was launched to the media about a week ago at the Cinema 5 of Greenbelt 3 in Ayala Center, Makati City. Let’s Go Sago and other bloggers were able to have a preview of the first two series which are on Batad and Coron. Philippine Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr and NGC officials also graced the event.
Yours truly have been to both destinations in 2006 (Coron) and 2008 (Batad). But interestingly, the documentary was able to show the other side of Coron – the preserved sections protected from the public. For the Batad feature, it was good that they allowed local folks tell their own story.
Both locations have their own concerns with Coron needing an increased awarness to preserve their nature-rich island destination. While Batad, is on the verge of having their culture and religious traditions fade as modern times slowly lure away their younger generation.

“It is also our way of supporting the Department of Tourism’s ‘It’s more fun in the Philippines’ campaign to promote the country’s best sites to the world,” adds NGC vice president and territory head for Philippines Jude Turcuato.
The show intends to “reveal the cultural and historical bases of the sites, elevate the issues hand in hand with the natural beauty, so that the viewer achieves a more comprehensive appreciation of the national treasures in the Philippines.”
